Reflection+Online Course Design

Online language teaching is a great method to teach a foreign language

The advantages of online course

  1. time-saving, money-saving
  2. effective
  3. accessible and convenient (distance education (Bray, Aoki & Dlugosh, 2008))

The disadvantages of online course:

Being less interested / motivated

My design

Target student: teenagers

Objective: improving speaking ability in daily life/ grammatical knowledge

Besides providing videos on some certain websites, I would adopt these things…

Blog- a significant tool in online language teaching-

posting various kinds of authentic teaching material (articles, videos, web link)/ making learning becomes interesting

collect feedback from the comment-it is a platform for teacher and learners to interact (Murray & Hourigan, 2008 )

A tool to create collective language production (Lund, 2008)-learners could help each other to learn

display learning result-assessment (Video)

upload homework (the challenge is that someone may delete it)

Second life

It could create an environment that is not be restrained in real life (Jarmon, Traphagan, Mayrath & Trivedi, 2009).

a great way to communicate-practicing the ability of expression in the target language

The Software of Second Life

We explore a new software in the course, which is called Second Life. Personally speaking, I am quite familiar with this software since I was obsessed with a very similar one when I was a child. This software reminds me of my lovely childhood.

I hope I would explore more about this wonderful software for English teaching and learning.

Some strategies of English Learning (Not original)

I copy this article from this website (here is a link)

And I hope it could useful when it comes to English Learning as a beginner.

Learning strategies

Learning strategies or study skills determine the approach for achieving the learning objectives. The strategies are usually tied to your needs and interests to enhance learning and are based on many types of learning styles.

Here are some strategies that can help you be successful in your studies.

Set small, achievable goals

Start with small steps to reach higher targets.

For example, try to learn 5 new English vocabulary items every day.
Set a 30 minutes study session every day.
Learn the lyrics of an English song every now and then.
Read a short English text every day.
Setting small targets is much better than setting huge goals that you cannot achieve. Remember that “small drops of water make the mighty ocean”

Plan your studies

Planning your studies gives meaning to your work. If you know all the steps necessary to achieve a goal and these steps are written down on a piece of paper, it will be easy for you, then, to see the whole picture.

Be motivated

The secret to success is that you should be motivated to learn. Try to avoid boredom by having fun in what you do. Try to find a positive aspect to studying English.

Read about what you are interested in (hobbies, fields of interest…)
Watch your favourite films in English
Listen to your favourite English songs and learn the lyrics.
Write your diary in English.
Read about your favorite stars in…
Remember, we learn better and fast things we really want to learn.

Manage your time

In order to manage your time successfully, having an awareness of what your goals are will assist you in prioritizing your activities. Time management provides you with the opportunity to create a schedule that works for you, not for others. This personal touch gives you the flexibility to include the things that are most important to you.

Set a reward for yourself

Set a reward for yourself that you can look forward to. For example, when you reach a goal, give yourself a reward:

Watch a movie.
have a delicious snack.
Meet your friends.
Go to the café.

The second class of OLL

Time does fly! It is the second time that I attend the OLL course. This week, we create our own wiki though I do not know how to make it work.

Anyway, it is a new experience. I think I should make an effort to add more useful and meaningful materials to this blog.

Personally speaking, I do interested  in English speaking and I think I will post something about that.
